Every year there comes a time to take one final drive before thinking about long-term storage for your Mercedes-Benz. Your luxury vehicle needs the highest quality storage to remain in tip-top condition.
The best practices for long-term storage aren’t always obvious, but if you want to avoid a potentially nasty or expensive surprise when you go to drive your car months down the line, you should follow these guidelines.
Storage Location
Make sure you pick a storage location that will keep your car from being too exposed. One option is a storage facility, but this can often be expensive. The next best thing would be your garage.
If you don’t have garage space, you’ll at least want to get a car cover that protects your car from the elements when you’re not driving it.
Fuel Tank
Another important best practice is to always fill the gas tank all the way up before long-term car storage.
If you don’t do this, you’ll risk letting rust form on the inside of the fuel tank. Adding a fuel stabilizer as well will help make sure your engine stays in top condition.
Flat Spots
If your car is parked for too long in one spot you might get flat spots on your tires. Flat spots arise when only one part of your tire has been in contact with the ground for an extended period of time.
If you don’t see them, you’ll probably notice them soon as they cause a rumbling or vibrating feeling when you start driving.
An effective way to avoid getting flat spots is to maintain proper air pressure in your tires. Another method is to re-park your car every few weeks so a different part of the tire is in contact with the ground.
A third way to lessen the weight on your tires is to prop up your car on jack stands. These are generally not too expensive, and allow you to avoid the risk of flat spots altogether.
Oil
Change the engine oil in your Mercedes if you plan to keep it in long-term car storage.
This helps get rid of dirt and debris that may be in your engine, and also will lessen the corrosive effects of old oil.
Battery
You’ll also want to pay attention to the status of your battery when thinking about long-term car storage. It’s unlikely your battery will maintain its charge after a long period of storage, so you’ll want to do one of two things to make sure it doesn’t get ruined.
One option is to remove the battery and store it indoors. The second option is to purchase a battery maintainer, also called a trickle charger. This continuously provides just enough charge to your battery so that it won’t die.
