Mercedes Benz Cooling Parts FAQ’s:

  1. What are the main components of the Mercedes Benz cooling system? The radiator is the most prominent component of a Mercedes-Benz cooling system, as it sits in front of the engine. The water pump pushes the coolant through the system, and the expansion tank holds extra coolant. The system is also comprised of fans and hoses, while some vehicles have additional pumps or an oil cooler as well.
  2. How often should I replace the coolant in my Mercedes Benz? How often you need to replace the coolant in your Mercedes depends on how much you drive. Mercedes-Benz recommends changing the coolant every 30,000 miles or every 2 years, whichever comes first.
  3. What are the signs of a failing cooling system in my Mercedes Benz? The first sign you might notice when your cooling system starts failing are high temperature readings on the dash gauge. More severe signs include white exhaust smoke, steam coming from the engine, or leaking coolant.
  4. How can I prevent my Mercedes Benz from overheating? Prevention measures include making sure you are using the correct coolant for your vehicle, regularly checking the coolant level, and keeping the radiator fins free of dust or debris.
  5. Can I use any type of coolant in my Mercedes Benz? There are many different types of coolants, and they are not interchangeable. You should always follow the Mercedes-Benz recommendation for what type of coolant you should use for your car’s engine.
  6. What does the auxiliary fan do? The auxiliary fan helps ensure the engine remains cool once it reaches very high temperatures. The auxiliary fan sits in front of the radiator to help pull air through the fins for additional cooling.
  7. How do you know if your coolant fan is bad? One way to tell if the cooling fan is bad is to listen for it: if you are not able to hear the fan, it may be faulty. In addition, keep an eye on the temperature gauge on your dash: a faulty fan will cause the engine to consistently run hot.
  8. Can you put a block heater in a Mercedes? There are block heaters made to fit Mercedes engines and they are quite common to use, especially for diesel models that are more prone to being affected by cold weather.
  9. Is it worth getting a block heater for your car? If you live in an area with colder weather, generally below 10 degrees Fahrenheit on a normal basis, it may be worth installing a block heater to help ensure your car will start when you need it to with less strain on your engine components.
  10. Do modern cars have block heaters? Modern cars are less likely to require block heaters, especially ones that use synthetic oil. However, installing a block heater on a diesel engine if you frequently experience cold weather may be beneficial.
  11. Is it bad to leave a block heater plugged in overnight? A block heater will not harm your engine if you leave it on overnight. However, if you are concerned about leaving it plugged in for too long, you can also add a timer that will control when and how long the block heater will run. Generally, you will want to run the heater for 2-3 hours in order to warm up a cold engine.
  12. What are the symptoms of a failing coolant expansion tank? An expansion tank is generally only considered failing or faulty if it has cracks in it that will cause coolant to leak out and prevent the cooling system to remain pressurized. If you have a failing expansion tank, you will constantly be running out of coolant and your car will overheat. Check for signs of leaking coolant to determine if the fault is with the expansion tank or another cooling component.
  13. How much does it cost to replace a coolant tank on a Mercedes? Most Mercedes coolant tanks are relatively inexpensive, from $40-$130. Keep in mind that you will also need to account for the cost of labor to replace the tank if you do not intend to do it yourself.
  14. How long does a coolant expansion tank last? Since they are generally made from plastic and are subject to heat from your engine, coolant expansion tanks are prone to eventually wearing down. Typically an expansion tank should last anywhere from 5 to 10 years.
  15. What are symptoms of a bad fan clutch? As with all of the other cooling system components, a failing fan clutch will cause your engine to run hotter than normal. You may also hear that the radiator fan is louder than normal and may sound wobbly.
  16. How much does it cost to replace fan clutch? The cost of a fan clutch can vary based on the brand as well as the year and model the fan clutch is for. Our fan clutches range from around $100-$300.
  17. What happens if you drive with a bad fan clutch? A bad fan clutch will prevent the cooling fan to operate properly, causing your engine to overheat while running. Allowing your engine to overheat can be very dangerous and could lead to even more expensive repairs than replacing just the fan clutch.
  18. How much does it cost to replace coolant hoses? Every car has a variety of cooling hoses that vary in size and therefore in price. The year and model of the car can also affect the price, as hoses for older vehicles become more difficult to find. Our coolant hose prices range from $100-$700.
  19. How much does it cost to replace the oil cooler on a Mercedes? Many oil coolers for older Mercedes models are very difficult to find, making them more expensive: up to $1400. We do also sell good used oil coolers at more affordable prices from $175-$495.
  20. What is an oil cooler on a Mercedes? An oil cooler is a smaller version of a radiator specifically to lower the temperature of the motor oil before it returns to the engine. When oil gets too hot, it thins out and becomes less effective: the oil cooler prevents this from happening.
  21. What happens when the engine oil cooler goes bad? If an oil cooler fails to lower the temperature of the oil, it can cause the engine to overheat or run less efficiently. However, if there is a crack in the oil cooler, it could cause the oil to leak out and cause more damage to your engine.
  22. Does a Mercedes have a radiator? All cars with a combustion engine will have a radiator, including a Mercedes-Benz. The radiator is essential for keeping the temperature of the engine from getting too hot.
  23. How much does it cost to replace a radiator in a Mercedes? The price of a radiator for a Mercedes can vary widely based on the brand of the radiator, as well as the year and model it fits. We have radiators that range from $100 all the way up to $3000.
  24. Who makes Mercedes radiators? Original Mercedes radiators were made by Behr. Although it is very difficult to find a brand new Behr radiator for classic Mercedes, Nissens and Magneti Marelli continues to make OE-quality radiators for older models. We also offer aluminum radiators for several years and models.
  25. How much does it cost to replace a Mercedes water pump? As with many other car components, the price of a water pump can vary greatly depending on the brand, condition, and rarity of the part. We have quality aftermarket pumps that start at $59, with some rebuilt OE pumps going for $895.
  26. What is the water pump on a Mercedes Benz? The water pump in a Mercedes is responsible for actually moving the coolant through the cooling system. The pressure it creates allows the coolant to flow through the radiator and hoses to keep the engine cool.
  27. How long does a Mercedes water pump last? Generally, a water pump should last up to 100,000 miles before needing to be replaced.
  28. How can I tell if my Mercedes Benz water pump is failing? A failing water pump will either prevent coolant from flowing through the cooling system like it should, or cause coolant to leak. Either way, your engine will continue to overheat and you may see leaking coolant underneath your car. You may be able to determine whether the water pump or another component is at fault by tracing where the wet coolant is leaking from.
