Mercedes Benz Engine Parts

Of all the components that go into your Mercedes Benz, only one component actually makes your car go: The engine. Diesel or gas-powered, in a Mercedes Benz the engine is a legitimate work of art, an example of revolutionary engineering that does much more than convert chemical energy into torque: It makes a Mercedes a Mercedes.

Mercedes Benz Engine Parts FAQ’s:

  1. Can a Mercedes engine be repaired? We have been rebuilding Mercedes engines for over 30 years to keep these classic cars on the road. Although the individual parts needed to repair an engine are getting more difficult to source, we are still dedicated to rebuilding these great machines.
  2. How much does a bearing cost for a Mercedes-Benz? We provide main bearing and rod bearing sets for a variety of different Mercedes-Benz engines. Depending on the age and rarity of the engine, the bearing sets can range between $59 and $899.
  3. How much does it cost to replace a belt tensioner on a Mercedes? The belt tensioners that we carry for Mercedes-Benz vehicles range between $100 and $300. Keep in mind, this does not include the cost of labor for your mechanic to install the new belt tensioner.
  4. How often should belt tensioners be replaced? The belt tensioner helps drive the serpentine belt to run several important components, so it is prone to wear. You can expect a belt tensioner to last around 50,000 miles or so. It may be wise to replace the belt tensioner should you need to replace the serpentine belt.
  5. How do I know if my belt tensioner needs replacing? You may need to take a look at your belt tensioner of you start hearing a squeaking sound while your vehicle is running. A failing belt tensioner may also cause problems with the components driven by the serpentine belt including the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, or AC compressor.
  6. What happens if my camshaft position sensor goes out? A faulty camshaft position sensor will prevent your engine from achieving proper combustion, causing the fuel injectors to stay open too long or prevent proper ignition timing. The excess fuel can flood the combustion chambers, causing reduced fuel efficiency, engine sputtering, or prevent the engine from starting at all.
  7. How much does it cost to replace a camshaft sensor on a Mercedes? We stock camshaft position sensors that fit a variety of models that range in price from $26 to $119. Older and rarer models may require camshaft position sensors that are more difficult to find that may be more expensive to purchase.
  8. What is a camshaft sensor for Mercedes? The camshaft sensor determines the exact positioning of the camshaft and sends that data to various other components to ensure precise timing of fuel injection and combustion inside the engine. The camshaft sensor communicates with the ECU and makes sure the camshaft, valves, injectors, spark plugs, and many other components are working in unison.
  9. What happens when a cam fails? You will most likely detect an issue with a camshaft if your engine is backfiring frequently. Other poorly-timed engine functions can lead to overall poor engine performance or damage to the internal components of the engine if the issue is not addressed.
  10. What happens when the crankshaft position sensor goes out? The crankshaft position sensor is possibly the most critical engine sensor: without it, the timing of the pistons will be miscalculated and will cause misfires or engine vibration. You may have difficulty starting the car, reduce the car’s performance, and consume more fuel. It is likely that without a working sensor, the engine will not start at all.
  11. How much does it cost to replace a crankshaft position sensor on a Mercedes? The price of crankshaft position sensors can vary widely based on the year and model of your Mercedes. Some sensors start at around $35 and can run anywhere up to $699.
  12. Where is the crankshaft position sensor Mercedes? The crankshaft position sensor is normally on the rear end of the engine block next to where it connects to the transmission. It is usually found on the driver’s side of the engine block close to the firewall.
  13. How much does it cost to fix a blown head gasket on a Mercedes-Benz? Most of the cost in fixing a head gasket comes from the labor, not the cost of the gaskets themselves. A set of Mercedes-Benz head gaskets costs between $79 and $199, whereas the labor costs could be $2000 or more.
  14. Are engine gaskets hard to replace? Replacing engine gaskets is not the type of maintenance that should be done by anyone other than a professional. Since it requires dismantling parts of the car’s engine, it is best left to a mechanic to replace a gasket.
  15. How much does it cost to replace lifters? Lifters can be relatively inexpensive compared to other engine components: ranging from $39 to $169. Most of the cost in replacing lifters in your Mercedes will come from labor.
  16. Is it worth it to replace lifters? Replacing worn or faulty lifters is worth the risk of causing further damage to your engine. A faulty lifter can damage the camshaft, valves, or even your exhaust system due to increased emissions.
  17. How much does it cost to replace a Mercedes oil pan? The engine oil pan on a Mercedes will cost around $150-$300 for the part. As with anything relating to the engine, the cost of labor will be the larger portion of the expense, due to the difficulty of removing or dismantling it.
  18. How often do oil pans need to be replaced? An oil pan on a car normally should not have to be replaced. Often, the problem comes from rocks or other debris on the road that causes damage to the oil pan that requires it to be replaced.
  19. What are the signs of a weak oil pump? The first sign of a failing oil pump could be a warning light for low oil pressure. In addition, you may hear rattling noises while the car is idling or the car may not start at all.
  20. Can I drive with a broken oil pump? Driving with a broken oil pump can be dangerous and ultimately cost you more in further repairs. Without oil moving through the engine, parts like the camshaft or crankshaft may become damaged due to a lack of lubrication.
  21. What is the average cost to replace an oil pump? The cost of an oil pump is based on the rarity of the vehicle, as well as the condition and brand of the pump. The oil pumps we carry typically cost between $250-$600.
  22. What does a Mercedes oil separator do? The oil separator in your Mercedes helps prevent the build-up of oil inside your engine. Aerated oil that is blown through the engine during combustion is collected by the oil separator and returned to the oil system, preventing it from clogging up the internal components of the system.
  23. How often should you change oil separator? Your air oil separator should be checked every three to six months, or every 3,000 miles or so.
  24. Are air oil separators necessary? Having a functioning air oil separator is a good way to protect much more expensive engine components from being damaged. The oil separator is there to prevent oil build-up in critical areas of your engine that rely on precise control to function properly.
  25. How much does an oil separator cost? While an important part in maintaining your engine, an oil separator is relatively inexpensive. Most genuine or OE oil separators will run between $20 and $100.
  26. What are the signs of worn piston rings? Worn piston rings will reduce the overall power of your engine. If you notice an increased amount of time between pressing the gas and when the engine’s power increases, the piston rings may be the cause.
  27. How much does it cost to replace piston rings? Because of the price machining required for piston rings, and the difficulty in finding piston rings for older Mercedes engines, most of our piston ring sets go for $200-$400.
  28. Do Mercedes timing chains need to be replaced? Under normal circumstances, a well-made timing chain would not need to be replaced and can last the entire lifespan of the engine: usually over 100,000 miles and upwards of 300,000.
  29. Do Mercedes have timing chain problems? A vast majority of Mercedes-Benz engines will not experience any problems with the timing chain. One exception is 1981-1983 380SL engines that had a single timing chain, which is prone to failure. Luckily, the timing chain, the chain tightener, guide gear, and all the other components for a dual timing chain system for that vehicle are available to prevent this issue.
  30. How much does it cost to replace a Mercedes timing chain? Despite being an essential component of the engine, timing chains are readily available for most models and relatively inexpensive. Most timing chains are available from a variety of brands and usually cost between $79 and $199.
  31. Which Mercedes have timing chains? Most Mercedes-Benz vehicles use a timing chain instead of a timing belt. The timing chain is protected by a cover, whereas a rubber timing belt is less protected and can crack or tear.
  32. How much does it cost to replace a tensioner? When looking for tensioners for your Mercedes, you should know whether you are looking for a chain tensioner or a belt tensioner. While both start around $99 in price, our belt tensioners can run up to $300, while some chain tensioners can be as much as $400.
  33. How long do tensioners last? Chain tensioners and belt tensioners are not in need of replacement very often: they tend to last at least 50,000 miles and upwards of 100,000 miles.
  34. When should valve guides be replaced? As with the engine valves themselves, valve guides are made to last the entire lifespan of the engine and under normal circumstances would not need to be replaced.
  35. What do valve guides do? The valve guide protects the cylinder head from the heat and friction of the moving valve. It helps stabilize the valve while also allowing hot air to escape properly.
  36. Can you replace valve guides? While not usually necessary, valve guides can be replaced if they become damaged or worn. Special tools are available to remove and replace valve guides to make the process easier, though the work should still be done by a professional.
  37. What are the symptoms of worn valve stem seals? Bad valve stem seals can be detected if oil begins to collect inside the cylinder head under the valve cover after starting a cold engine, which often leads to blue exhaust smoke as well. Valve stem seals may also be the cause if you are losing excessive oil without detecting any oil leaks.
  38. How often should you change valve seals? Valve seals should not be something that needs to be replaced often. Infrequent oil changes is one of the leading causes of valve seals degrading, but will usually last over 100,000 to 200,000 miles.
  39. What is the price of Mercedes Benz valve? Exhaust valves in a Mercedes are often inexpensive and are priced between $29 and $49.
  40. What are the symptoms of a broken valve? Since they are all contribute to the same function, it is sometimes difficult to determine whether an engine problem is caused by the valves, a valve guide, or a valve seal. All three may present symptoms of increased oil consumption, blue exhaust smoke, or reduced engine power.
  41. How long do engine valves last? Technically, there is no lifespan for engine valves like there is with many other components of a vehicle. Other than being damaged by corrosion, debris, or some other manner, engine valves should last the entire lifespan of the engine.
