Mercedes Benz Fuel System Component FAQ’s:

  1. What are the components of fuel system? The fuel system in a vehicle encompasses many different parts: from the fuel tank itself, the fuel pump, fuel distributor, as well as various injectors, regulators, valves, and sensors. Many of the components differ between diesel vehicles and gas vehicles: the primer pump, shutoff diaphragms, and the fuel injectors.
  2. What is an MAF sensor on Mercedes? The MAF sensorβ€”or Mass Air Flow sensorβ€”helps regulate the air-fuel mixture required for proper combustion in your vehicle. The mass air flow sensor can be found between the air filter and the intake manifold.
  3. What problems can a mass air flow sensor cause? A faulty mass air flow sensor will prevent your vehicle from maintaining the proper air-fuel mixture, which can cause your vehicle to idle roughly, to stall, can cause jerking motions while accelerating, or even decrease your fuel economy.
  4. What does a mass air sensor do? The mass air flow sensor is responsible for maintaining the proper air-fuel mixture required for proper combustion in your vehicle’s engine. As air passes through the sensor, an electrically heated wire begins to cool down, requiring more current to maintain the hot temperature of the wire. The amount of additional power to heat the wire is interpreted by your vehicle to control the amount of air moving through the sensor, and thus into the engine.
  5. How do you test a Mercedes cold start valve? You can first test the electrical resistance of the cold start valve to test if the problem is an electrical one. You can also remove the valve from the engine, and with the electrical plug and fuel line connected, test the spray of the valve by holding a clear plastic container around the end of the valve while starting the car.
  6. What does the cold start valve do? As the name indicates, the cold start valve operates when starting the car when the engine is too cold for proper combustion to be achieved. The cold start valve is the modern equivalent of a choke: providing the extra fuel required to achieve combustion before your engine warms up to temperature.
  7. Can a cold start valve be repaired? In general, cold start valves only fail for one of two reasons: they become dirty and clogged, or the valve has lost its seal integrity. A cold start valve can be cleaned, including with an ultrasonic cleaner. The valve may also have to be buffed and repolished to create a flat, smooth surface required to achieve a good seal.
  8. What is a primer pump on a diesel engine? The primer pump helps conserve energy consumption by pumping enough diesel from the fuel tank to start a cold engine without over-utilizing the main fuel pump.
  9. What does a Mercedes fuel accumulator do? The fuel accumulator maintains pressure in the fuel lines after shutting off your car to make it easier to start your vehicle again with a warm engine. If you have difficulty re-starting your engine when it’s warm, it may be a sign of a bad fuel accumulator.
  10. Are fuel tank caps universal? While there are universal fuel caps that will fit on most modern vehicles, it is best to use a fuel cap specifically sized for your specific model to maintain a proper seal.
  11. How does a Mercedes fuel distributor work? The fuel distributor is a control valve that is an essential component in CIS fuel systems, routing fuel from the main fuel line to the individual fuel injectors. The fuel distributor is mounted to an air flow meter that determines how much fuel to supply by the amount of air flowing through the meter.
  12. How do you rebuild a Mercedes fuel distributor? Mercedes fuel distributors are rebuilt by dismantling the part, thoroughly cleaning each component, and replacing any that are damaged. While the process seems simple, rebuilding a fuel distributor should be left to a professional to ensure the unit is tested to meet the original Bosch and Mercedes specifications for operation.
  13. What is a fuel distributor? A fuel distributor is a type of control valve used in K-Jetronic fuel injection systems. The fuel distributor separates the flow of fuel from the tank to the fuel injectors.
  14. What is CIS fuel injection? The Continuous Injection System (CIS) is named for the fact that the fuel distributor continuously supplies fuel to the injectors, which do not open and close like they do in some other systems. The system, developed by Bosch, was a development over a carbureted and a precursor to the Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system.
  15. How much is a fuel injector for Mercedes? Mercedes fuel injectors can be purchased brand new or rebuilt. Some can be purchased for as low as $30, with some costing over $200 per injector.
  16. Are fuel injectors worth replacing? Fuel injectors are essential for a car to start and continue running. If the fuel injectors go bad, you are likely to have difficulty starting the vehicle. Fuel injectors should be replaced when they start showing signs of issues in order to maintain the proper flow of fuel into the engine.
  17. What is the most common cause of injector failure? The most common cause of problems with fuel injectors is a buildup of contaminants, like carbon, clogging the inside of the injector. Debris in the fuel line can also cause the injector to wear down and begin to leak.
  18. Where are fuel pressure regulators located? The fuel pressure regulator is found along the fuel line and is often visible underneath the hood. In continuous injection fuel systems, the regulator is often found right next to the fuel distributor.
  19. How much do fuel pumps cost? Most fuel pumps for Mercedes can range between $100 and $400, with some of the more rare vintage model fuel pumps costing around $1000 for a rebuilt unit.
  20. How much does a Mercedes gas tank hold? The fuel capacity for a Mercedes varies and depends on the particular model: the R107 can hold 90 liters (23.8 gallons), while the W123 only hold about 65 liters (17.2 gallons). The modern average for vehicles today is between 45 and 65 liters.
  21. What are the symptoms of a faulty idle control valve? When an idle control valve becomes clogged or starts to fail, it is unable to maintain the proper engine idling speed. You may notice an abnormally high or low idle speed, or the idle speed may be inconsistent by rising and falling.
  22. What are the signs of a failing injector pump? The most common sign of a failing injector pump is engine sputtering or engine misfires. The engine will be more difficult to start, and you may notice a decreased amount of vehicle power.
  23. What causes injector pumps to fail? More often than not, injector pump failure comes from contaminants in the fuel you use building up inside the pump until it can no longer work properly. If you have a bad injector pump, it is possible to rebuild the unit: professionals will fully clean the unit and test it for proper performance.
  24. What are the symptoms of a faulty throttle body? When debris builds up on the throttle body, either preventing the air flap to open and close properly or blocking some of the electrical components, air intake into the engine is not going to be at the appropriate level. If you are experiencing uneven acceleration or lack of power while acceleratingβ€”or if you have noticed a reduction in your vehicle’s normal fuel economyβ€”these may be signs of issues with your throttle body.
  25. What does a warm up regulator do? In a continuous injection fuel system (CIS), the warm-up regulator helps start the vehicle when the engine is cold by allowing more fuel to flow through the fuel injectors. As the engine warms up, the warm-up regulator applies more pressure to the injectors, reducing the amount of fuel it lets through.

It goes without saying, without a quality Fuel System, your Mercedes Benz doesn’t go. No matter whether you drive a diesel or a gasoline-powered Benz, regular checkup maintenance schedules of all Fuel System Parts are imperative for a Mercedes of any age, because even precise German engineering needs a tune-up once in a while.

Whenever maintaining, repairing or rebuilding a Mercedes Benz fuel distribution and injection system, there are several major parts of which to consider replacement. What about the Fuel Injector itself? How old is the Fuel Pump? Is the Fuel Distributor still in good shape, including all its connections?

But wait – there’s more. A Mercedes Benz fuel system, diesel or gas, requires a long list of components and equipment that the MB owner, restorer or show enthusiast will definitely want to pay attention to – and no matter which Mercedes Benz auto part you need, Adsit has it!
