1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing a Rare Beauty

An Investment Like No Other

Originally purchased for $6,000 back in 1965 by Cooper Weeks, a now-retired airline captain for TWA, this ‘55 300 SL Gullwing is now worth $1.5 million and certainly looks like it’s worth at least that much.

If you’re thinking about getting a classic back to pristine shape for yourself, check out our selection of Mercedes-Benz body parts as an excellent starting point.

When I was growing up in Des Moines, Iowa, nobody had ever heard of a Gullwing. In 1965, I saw an ad in a Road & Track magazine for one for sale on consignment. It was in Switzerland. I didn’t know what it was, but it struck me.

When I bought it for $6,000 (shipping was included), my father told me, “You can’t buy that car!” It was a used car, and I could buy a new Cadillac for that price. We had no idea the Gullwing would become an icon. A lot of people think of it today as the most beautiful car ever built.

In its day, the Gullwing was the fastest production car in existence—about 160 mph. It had cutting-edge technology like fuel injection, and the styling was radical, most notably the doors, which open like the wings of a bird.

Movie stars owned these cars, such as Clark Gable and Paul Newman. It was only made from 1954 to 1957, and that’s one of the reasons it is such a notable collector’s car today. Continue Reading

The Mercedes Benz G Wagon – The SUV You Would Want In The Event Of A Plague Or Zombie Apocalypse

The Walking Dead Aren’t a Problem if You’re Driving a G-Wagon

In the rare event of a zombie apocalypse, the main expected reactions we should see from people are rampant looting and evacuations of city centers. If you were to have the chance to get your hands on any vehicle (perhaps something your neighbors had that you were envious of), then what should you be looking for in your ideal survive-everything automobile of choice?

With congested roads, many of which might have been filled with abandoned vehicles as disaster strikes halted bumper to bumper traffic, and being trapped on the open highway like that leaves you rather exposed and open to disaster. One of the most essential features you can look for in a vehicle would be the ability to go off road, and then not needing to take a trip to the currently undead mechanic you used to go to. The 2017 AMG G65 SUV has off roading in spades, with simple efficient german engineering, and enough torque to comfortably drag 7000 pounds with that rather impressive 738 lb-ft torque output which can really get those rims spinning, just in case your getaway plan involved a boat.

With society collapsing, you will also need a lot of storage to take everything you need to survive, but also to live and thrive. This is something people often underestimate, planning out just water and beans for the next few months until things blow over. Which is a little too optimistic if you want to survive. You want a car that can store medical supplies, food, water, hunting and fishing supplies, camping gear, seeds if you plan on farming to survive the rest of your life, tools to fix anything that breaks, gas to refuel the tank since you never know when you are going to be able to stop and refill again, maybe storage if any of your friends or loved ones have survived, and toilet paper – you really don’t want to go cold turkey on this modern amenity.

The AMG G65 is also surprisingly fast for its size, pulling out 0 to 60 in a reasonable 5.3 seconds, for when you really need to be anywhere but where you currently are. Also while many may not like the classic G-Wagon boxy-shape, the view from the inside of the cab gives you a rather panoramic view in every direction, like seeing the entire world from an observation deck that is hauling balls over a sand dune.

And while I can advise the G-Wagon for the immediate future after societal collapse, the issues of continued need for gas really do crawl up and cripple this monster in the long run. When maintenance on the power grid ceases due to the apocalypse, we can swiftly expect the pumps at gas stations to cease working. You can get by with Siphoning if you know how to do it without sucking gas into your mouth, there are better ways to do it but we’d rather not the liability of explaining how to do so here.

The long story short though, is that in America Gasoline will quickly become a scarce resource as gas tanks shut down and tanks are siphoned down, or the gas spoiled from sitting idle too long – which if you lived to see would be a good indicator that you are otherwise doing pretty well at the whole surviving thing. What this is all leading up to though is that after using the AMG G65 to get the hell out of dodge and make your living until the smoke blows over, you will likely find more long term success using a diesel hulk like the Mercedes Charger vans which are certified to burn pretty much anything, but if you can get an established base set up, bio-diesel will be your ticket to riding out the rest of your days with some modern amenities afforded by a luxury car.

Classic 1971 Mercedes For Sale In Almost New Condition

Here’s the Classic Mercedes You’re Looking For

The Mercedes-Benz 280SL of the 1970s is a rare thing to ever see on modern roads, but just recently one has gone up for auction with just 54,000 miles and a track record of being safe from the elements.

The perfect pick-up for a classic car enthusiast or someone who’s never driven in an old Mercedes Roadster. A car like this can run almost indefinitely when it goes through proper engine maintenance.

Here’s a drop top classic from the ‘70s that will never go out of style. Ever. This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is practically new with only 54,818 miles on the clock and was just listed on Bring a Trailer.

According to BaT, the silver convertible with a dark blue leather interior was purchased from the original owner in 1976. It has stayed in the family ever since, and has only been driven in fair weather.

Now that’s really sad news. In order to truly experience a roadster as fine as this, one should drive it year-round, with the top always down. But, their loss is your gain. Continue Reading

Ququq Releases Camping Box Kit for Mercedes G-Class

Glamping in Your G-Class

The company with the amazingly fun to say name Ququq has been in the market of releasing specialized boxed kits to transform vehicles into campers by cramming in all the amenities they can in reasonably sized packages to make glamping easier than it has ever been before.

Now they’ve added the G-class to the list of vehicles that they are offering their accessories for and anyone who owns one of the Benz vans might be better for it.

Back in 2013, we looked at the Ququq box, an all-in-one camper box similar to European competitors like the Qubiq and Yatoo.

We liked the simple design and pricing on the Ququq, but the list of vehicles didn’t necessarily include every model we might like to take camping, especially if our camping plans were to include off-roading.

But Ququq has been expanding its line to fit additional vehicle models, and its latest product, the G-Box, transforms the famed Mercedes G-Class into the G-Camper, a powerful force in multi-day off-road exploration. Continue Reading

Mercedes 2017 Flagship Spotted Test Driving Along Mercedes S63 AMG

2017 S-Class and S63 AMG Caught Cruising Together

While we still eagerly await a full in depth reveal of the 2017 S-Class Mercedes, we have seen it drive along with its sibling the Mercedes S63 AMG.

The new S-Class will sport many of the features revealed with the new E-Class including a tasteful infotainment system that is integrated better than ever before. While your Mercedes might not match up to the 2017 S-Class with modern features, you could gear up that engine so your Mercedes too could enjoy the road along the S63 AMG.

The facelifted Mercedes S-Class was spotted during development testing in Southern Europe, along with its go-faster silbing, the mighty S63 AMG.

The German luxury flagship is set to receive a range of updates, including some of the advanced tech features that debuted in the E-Class. Things like touch-sensitive controls, a new three-spoke steering wheels and a new set of digital displays are already a given, thanks to our skilled spies’ previous efforts.

Being one of the most impressive features of the current model, the updated S-Class will host a pair of two new high-resolution screens with no buttons in between them, making them look more unified and elegant. The infotainment system will be controlled by the new touchpad knob on the center console. Continue Reading

Lake Forest Mercedes Owner Offered Deal Too Good To Be True

Cautionary Tale in Street Repair

A Mercedes C-300 owner in Lake Forest, California heard their deal of a lifetime when two men solicited her to do body work on her car to remove a key scuff for the low price of $700.

When they had finished their work the job seemed well enough done for her to pay the men, but when she went through the car wash, her paint began to flake away to reveal the scam. This should be a grim reminder for all luxury car owners to get all their Mercedes body repair done at licensed repair shops.

A Lake Forest woman said she was scammed by men offering to do body work on her Mercedes C-300, but left thousands of dollars worth of damage to the vehicle.

Karin May said two men posed as body shop workers and approached her on July 30 at about 2 p.m. She had some smaller key scratches on her vehicle that she wanted removed.

“One was wearing a Toyota shirt and the other was wearing a Lexus shirt and they said this is what they do for a living,” recalled May. Continue Reading

Mercedes Goes to Digital Marketing for Tennis Season

Benz Trying to Tie Tennis to Their Cars

Mercedes-Benz has released a 2 minute long video featuring Roger Federer who portrays himself as well as many great tennis players over the last 60 years alongside the ever changing Mercedes SL series.

A commercial that exemplifies honor for the great sportsmen of the past and their legacies, as well as hammering in that Mercedes greatness with the longest running history among all auto manufacturers.

For your Mercedes SL, be sure to maintain that gorgeous SL body so that legend will always look its best.

As the U.S. Open tennis tournament nears, Mercedes-Benz is teaming with one of the game’s all-time greats in a humorous ad campaign.

“Timeless” features the Mercedes SL and Roger Federer — in multiple forms.

Thanks to a combination of computer-generated imaging and a camcorder, the campaign highlights tennis history by having Federer perform as stars such as Rod Laver, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi and Bjorn Borg.

At the same time, the videos also feature Mercedes SLs and how the roadster has evolved over the years.

Mercedes began releasing teasers last week on its YouTube channel. The full video (2 minutes, 9 seconds) was initially released by Federer on his Facebook page and is available on YouTube. Continue Reading

Mercedes E-Class Protects In Case Of Nessie Attack

Cute Commercial Makes a Serious Point

Mercedes has posted some new adverts featuring a family watching for the mythical beast at Loch Ness. While the beast does not show up, the commercial explains the new safety features which activate upon detecting an oncoming crash which will protect the passengers from harm by moving them away from the impact zone.

So while your car might be totaled, you’ll live on to repair your car and drive again.

If you’re on the hunt for the Loch Ness monster, Mercedes-Benz has your back. More specifically, the Stuttgart company’s 2017 E-Class sedan and station wagon can protect your sides and your ears, should Nessie decide to charge or if the E-Class Pre-Safe features detect an imminent collision, according to Daimler.

New television commercials that Mercedes will also present on social media channels show a father and son parked by Loch Ness in Scotland, waiting for the fabled monster to appear.

While they wait, the boy watches intently from the backseat eating a sandwich while his dad nods off. The scene then switches to a disembodied, echoing voice explaining one of two new Mercedes safety features: Pre-Safe Sound and Pre-Safe Impulse Side. Continue Reading

Go Anywhere in this Benz – Who’s Gonna Stop You?

Mercedes have outdone their selves with the new Maybach S600 Limousine with safety and luxury features that will redefine what it means to be a top of the line stretch limousine. But for those who need the most premium protection on the market a Canadian after market upgrade service has released a chassis upgrade that makes the Maybach S600 into the heaviest and swankiest bullet proof car around.

Over the past 100 years, Mercedes-Benz has earned quite a reputation for building some of the toughest and most solidly engineered cars in the world. Sitting at the top of Mercedes’ lineup is the massive Mercedes-Maybach S600 limo.

The 5,300-pound luxury sedan offers more performance and safety than most people in the world would ever need. But there are a select few who need more protection than crumple zones and a lot of airbags. They need to stop bombs and bullets. They need armor.

For these Mercedes-Maybach owners, Canada’s Inkas Armored Vehicle Manufacturing has come up with a Maybach that can offer some “extra protection.” Continue Reading

Arlington Woman Test Drives Mercedes SUV Into Own Car

How Not to Take a Test Drive

As shocking as it sounds, a woman in Arlington, Virginia has caused a rather impressive, but fortunately 0-casualty, 5-car accident while when test driving a new Mercedes SUV in the Mercedes parking lot she suddenly accelerated into 4 other vehicles including her own personal car, and then over-corrected away from the crash flipping the dealership’s SUV onto its side.

The woman is currently nursing her wallet and pride after having the extensive damage to multiple vehicles Bodies, especially the test vehicles.

There’s a terrible stereotype that women aren’t exactly the best drivers, and one incident that took place last Friday certainly isn’t helping to dispel it.

While taking a Mercedes-Benz SUV out for a spin at a dealership in Arlington, Virginia, a woman suddenly accelerated the brand new vehicle, striking four other cars — one of which was her own.

In a panic, she then proceeded to turn the wheel at such a sharp angle that the car ended up flipping onto its side, according to WRC. Continue Reading

Mercedes Gives Rights to E Class to Chinese BAIC

Benz Expands Further into China with E-Class Deal

The Chinese auto maker which Mercedes has taken 12% ownership of has received a heft gift from the German auto-maker which includes design and production rights to the Mercedes E-Class Sedan making BAIC the first Chinese auto maker to produce luxury sedans for the market.

While this will likely be unfelt around the rest of the world other than seeing Mercedes stock continue up in value, it does show a grand expansion of the Chinese auto industry in recent years.

For US patrons who are seeking to fix up a Mercedes Benz, click here and get that baby polished like new.

Daimler AG is giving China’s BAIC Motor Group permission to build cars using old Mercedes-Benz E-class designs and components, part of the German car maker’s effort to strengthen ties with its local partner in a country where its sales are rapidly growing.

The transfer of the outdated platform, essentially a shared basic chassis and design among vehicle models, clears the way for BAIC to become the first Chinese car maker to develop its own luxury vehicles. It will base its designs on the old Mercedes E Class.

Hubertus Troska, head of Daimler Greater China, said Monday that the transfer of the platform is part of an agreement the company and BAIC Motor Group made three years ago when Daimler bought a 12% stake in the Chinese state-run auto maker. Continue Reading

Mercedes on Ferrari Crash

When Luxury Collides

There was an unfortunate accident at the Great Falls Cars and Coffee Gathering August 6th where a Mercedes driver failed to parallel park and crushed the hood of a gorgeous Italian Ferrari. While modern Mercedes have options that allow them to safely park themselves, this old model outdates that feature by quite some time.

If you have an old Mercedes suffering from chassis bumps and scrapes, click here and help restore that model to its original beauty.

The latest cars from Mercedes-Benz are available with self-parking systems that can autonomously steer them into a space without hitting anything. Unfortunately for one Virginia woman, that technology wasn’t available in the 1980’s.

The driver of a Mercedes-Benz 380 SL had some trouble parallel parking at the Great Falls Cars and Coffee gathering on August 6th, when she backed up into and onto the hood of a Ferrari.

The aftermath of the low-speed collision was caught on camera, as was the arrival of the Italian car’s owner. Suffice it to say, his NSFW language suggests that he was not pleased: Continue Reading

Car Critic Alex Roy’s In Depth Look at Mercedes Drive Assist

Mercedes Benz’s 2017 E Class Drive Assist

Alex Roy burnt the midnight oil to deeply test and analyze the benefits and problems of Mercedes’ new top of the line Driver Assist mechanics which were a big step towards self driving cars. To put things briefly, he rather approved of a great many features Mercedes had progressed on and implemented well, but also lamented some critical failures of the system which he considered unsafe.

When push comes to shove though, the car’s features were mostly good, and with the right dedication you can toggle settings for achieving your perfect level of assistance while driving.

Unfortunately a lot of us who don’t have a new Mercedes will be missing out on some excellent life and fender saving technology.

What follows is a full review, as promised, of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including the new Drive Pilot feature and what Mercedes calls “semi-automated” driving features. This is a follow-up to my original and disputed comparison of this technology suite to Tesla’s Autopilot semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

I note that this test included, over the course of one week, about 250 miles of real-world testing in a top-of-the-line E-Class with Premium 3 Package; 400 pages read (and re-read) of the E-Class owner’s manual; heavy perusal of the company’s website and public statements regarding Drive Pilot; and two undercover visits to dealerships to ask questions of the sales people. NBA Hall of Famer Whacks Golf Ball into Mercedes

Pro Athletes Not Necessarily Good at Other Sports

It really does seem like golf is not the forte of former Chicago Bull Artis Gilmore who recently smashed someone’s windshield while playing a few rounds of golf.

Fortunately the owner of the Mercedes, which lost its windshield, had insurance and will have it replaced, but advises Artis that perhaps he should stick to basketball.

It seems NBA Hall of Famer Artis Gilmore is less accurate with a golf club than he was on the court.

We’re told that while on the links on Long Island with Nancy Shevell’s ex-husband, Hempstead Councilman Bruce Blakeman, the 7-foot-2 former Chicago Bulls center launched his golf ball through the window of a nearby Mercedes.

The vehicle turned out to belong to Butch Yamali, owner of local institution Peter’s Clam Bar. Continue Reading

Mercedes Postulates: Cars Can Grow on Trees

Will Cars of the Future be Made of Wood?

While yet to have a release date, Mercedes Benz has given us a sneak peak at the Alpha, the first wooden chassis car of their line. The concept of making cars from wood might be raising many a skeptical brow, due to such things as deforestation and the material making a stand in for modern metal alloys. Perhaps this skepticism in the market is why we’re so far off from seeing this come to the market. However, Mercedes does offer some wonderful concepts with this new technology concept.

As it stands right now, trees are being genetically modified to grow faster than ever, and mixing that with centuries of tree shaping techniques, there is plenty of plausibility in growing some complex components out of wood so long as the structure is properly engineered for the stress that the genetically modified wood can handle, which is a lot more than people seem to be criticizing it for considering normal woods are already notably rigid.

Whether or not the Mercedes Alpha will come within any reasonable time span, it seems the auto-manufacturers greatest trial with this concept would be selling the concept to a market that has had iron and steel manufacturing since the Model-T, but perhaps the lighter material weight of the Alpha can contribute to an excellent gas mileage, or impressive range of travel should Mercedes go the electric route.

Nevertheless, seeing as there aren’t any wooden parts yet, if you want to start saving up for the wooden car of the future, you should look into tuning up your Mercedes Benz rather than buying or leasing a new car every couple of years. What makes getting your tune-up parts from our selection easier to save up for an awesome grown wooden car is that we offer a ten percent discount on everything that we offer.

When we imagine an automotive production line, we think of mostly metal parts being put together down an assembly line. The Mercedes-Benz Alpha concept challenges this modern manufacturing style by introducing an entirely new production method.

What if you could GROW your Mercedes?! That’s the idea behind the Alpha. It’s two-part wood frame/chassis is thoughtfully formed from the second a seedling is planted. Using age-old grafting and tree-shaping techniques, entire genetically modified, fast-growing groves could be shaped to efficiently produce the vehicle’s various components in an eco-friendly way. After harvesting the pre-shaped timber, each section can be carved to the appropriate shape to form parts of the frame.

With this technique, nature itself becomes the cleanest, most efficient manufacturer without any artificial and polluting production processes. In fact, the trees are clean air contributors while they grow. Furthermore, the final production unit’s electric power brings its total carbon footprint down to almost zero. Continue Reading

Mercedes-Benz Roadmap Shows Aggressive Designs Posed To Threaten Competition

Where Mercedes-Benz is Heading

The roadmap we’ve gotten to see shows a busy game plan for Mercedes this year and the coming year and it seems their engineers have been busy at work designing up threats against the company’s biggest market competitors. In this and the coming year, Mercedes has 25 vehicles lines up for release. In the years full of new Mercedes Models, click here for good deals on body parts to help keep your Benz looking fresh in the rapidly evolving market.

Mercedes-Benz is on track to introduce no less than nine new or redesigned models. These include a facelifted S-Class, and a more rugged version of the brand new E-Class station wagon aimed squarely at Audi’s allroad. The E-Class lineup is also set to receive new coupe and convertible variants, while the company will introduce a pickup based on the Nissan Navara at the end of next year.

Interestingly, the original version of the presentation (pictured in our gallery) showed a model dubbed GLA Coupe. The slide was quickly amended, and the coupe’s spot has been filled by a simply a facelifted version of the GLA crossover. Mercedes hasn’t commented on the change. The GT R that debuted last month is also listed as one of the new models.

The slide also confirms that Mercedes-AMG is working on a topless version of the GT called GT C. It lists a coupe version of the GT C, which has fueled rumors that the 911-fighting model will receive a new engine next year. Although pure speculation, the GT C could be a more affordable model positioned at the bottom of the lineup. Continue Reading

Mercedes Benz S-Class 2030?

Ready for Mercedes-Benz 2030 Models?

While it’s not confirmed what class this imagination by Mercedes designer Gorden Wagener will be, what we do know is that it is known as the Transformer 3.0 with flexible materials allowing the car to morph its shape to be more aerodynamic at various speeds. Oh, did we mention that it drives its self? That should have been a no brainer as any good car of the future should be self driving.

While you won’t find any transforming chassis parts, you can find some factory fresh updates for your Benz by clicking here and finding your model.

What will we be driving in the year 2030? Perhaps the Mercedes-Benz Concept Digital Core if Daimler AG’s head designer Gorden Wagener has a say. Wagener’s renderings, created specifically for the German publication Auto Bild, present the marque’s response to the Rolls Royce Vision Next 100 concept—both offering full autonomous driving and comprehensive connectivity.

Building from the Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA (that debuted at last year’s Frankfurt auto show), the futuristic fastback will be replete with sensors and cameras intended to monitor the driver’s vision and transmit the information through an extensive “intelligent” fiber optics system. The intuitive operating system will handle all aspects of the transportive experience. Continue Reading

New Benz to Be Upcoming ‘Transformers’ Movie Star

The sexy new Mercedes-AMG GT R has hit the market and attracted a lot of attention with its sleek looks and amazing performance. Most interesting of all, the car has caught Michael Bay’s attention and he intends to use the car in ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ as the character Drift.

With all the action and destruction that goes in those movies, we’re sure Drift is going to need some new Body replacements to get back in shape for round 2 with Decepticons.

The fire-breathing new 198 mph Mercedes-AMG GT R that we told you about last month is already attracting interest in Hollywood. Specifically it’s been cast as “Drift” in the 5th installment in Michael Bay’s Transformers series, The Last Knight, due out next year.

The barely road-legal AMG GT R takes over the, um, role from a Bugatti Veyron, and will rev up beside the new Bumblebee Camaro and evil Barricade Mustang (below) previously revealed by Bay. Read More
