Can Mercedes Compete After Rosberg?

Mercedes Racing management had only a couple day’s notice that their new championship driver Rosberg intended to retire now that he’s rode to the championship in Mercedes’ racing machine, which has left the German auto team scrambling for a new driver for the 2017 season.

It seems that Valtteri Bottas is the first choice of Mercedes, but they intend not to make an official announcement until January third so we’ll be on the edge of our seats until then.

Rosberg was a fantastic driver who took advantage of what Mercedes could put under the hood, but Mercedes is certain to find more competent drivers to fill out their team in the wake of Rosberg.

In recent days it’s become clear that Valtteri Bottas is Mercedes’ first choice to replace Nico Rosberg – and that Williams is open to negotiating the Finn’s release. Adam Cooper explores the implications of a potential deal.

Two weeks have passed since Nico Rosberg’s retirement decision sent shockwaves through F1, and left the Mercedes management scrambling to find a new teammate for Lewis Hamilton.

The team said on Thursday that there would be no announcement before January 3, so that has at least left observers of this extraordinary situation a chance to catch their collective breath. Continue Reading

Mercedes-Maybach Convertible Tops Price for a Mercedes

Mercedes has dropped a bombshell with the Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet which is going to cost about 300,000 euros (About $320,000 USD) making it the most expensive Mercedes on the lineup by quite a large margin.

The new S650 is a souped up version of their previous S65 AMG Cabriolet, but the S650 rebuilds the previous model with fine wood, chrome, 621 HP V12 Engine and a whole array of luxury features that makes it worth the hefty price.

Mercedes is taking on the likes of Bentley with a long, sparkly convertible unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet is a very exclusive upgraded version of the already-expensive Mercedes S-class Cabriolet. Only 300 of these cars will be made, and they’ll feature lots of gorgeous inlaid wood trim and a loads of extra chrome.

Mercedes hasn’t yet said how much the S650 Cabriolet will cost in the U.S. In Europe, it will run 300,000 euros, which is roughly equivalent to $320,000.

The only Mercedes that’s nearly that expensive is the closely-related Mercedes-Benz (DDAIF) S65 AMG Cabriolet, which lists at $250,000. Continue Reading

Ricciardo Has Sights Set on Hamilton

For many teams that are not Mercedes, frustration has set in as Hamilton clutches down on the lead for the title to the point that Daniel Ricciardo and his teammate Max Verstappen need to do some aggressive driving to ensure the Mercedes leader doesn’t place anywhere near the top of the board.

Too many this is a scandal and unsportsmanlike, Hamilton and the Mercedes team have raced their hearts out to get the lead they have, so is it really a fair race to target and take Hamilton out of the last few races so that someone else can steal the  win.

Of course not all the Glory lies with Hamilton as the Mercedes pit team are in prime shape, changing wheels out in 2 seconds and keeping that Mercedes engine in tip top shape from race to race.

Daniel Ricciardo thinks he and teammate Max Verstappen would effectively be ‘fixing’ the Formula 1 world championship if they did not attack Mercedes in the final races.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are locked in an exclusive fight for the world championship, and there has been a lot of interest about the potential influence either of the Red Bull duo could have in deciding the outcome of the title battle.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has even found himself at the centre of a controversy in Brazil over a phone call he made to Jos Verstappen regarding his son Max. Continue Reading

Mercedes-Benz Considering Exit from F1 Racing

Mercedes-Benz has been a contractual member of Formula 1 racing since 2009 where Mercedes decided to join the sport not only as a racing team but as an engine supplier.

But their agreement to remain in the sport wraps up this coming 2020 and team boss Toto Wolff says that Mercedes will remain in the sport as long as it continues to develop in a positive way.

Team boss Toto Wolff says Mercedes is only committed to Formula 1 until 2020.

Mercedes co-owner and boss Wolff told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “Mercedes decided in 2009 to compete not only as an engine supplier but also with its own team in Formula 1. We have committed ourselves until 2020, but what happens then is unclear. In my opinion, we will stay in Formula 1 if the sport develops in a positive way.”

Mercedes’ commitment, as well as the other top teams, is in the form of bilateral contractual agreements with the Bernie Ecclestone-led commercial rights holder. Those rights are in the process of being taken over by Liberty Media. Continue Reading

The first of these cars will be run under the title sponsor WeatherTech, while the second will be under AMG and Team Riley Motorsports. With the titular sponsor of the race,

Mercedes seems poised to dominate yet another racing cup with superior engine performance.

The German automaker has announced that it has teamed up with the successful Riley Motorsports team to campaign a pair of Mercedes-AMG GT3 race cars in the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship.

One of the team’s cars will run with extended AMG assistance as “AMG-Team Riley Motorsports,” while the second race car will run as WeatherTech Racing, with sponsorship from the series’ title sponsor. 6-Cylinder Engine Modifications for Benz

Mercedes-Benz abandoned their inline engines back in the 90s when they made a move to consolidate their engine models with interchangeable parts for ease of production.

In the 90s V6 engines were the top of the line, but with Mercedes crack engineers they claim to get over 400 horses out of new 6 inline Mercedes engines which we expect to see entering almost every non-electric model from now on.

Fifteen years ago, Mercedes-Benz abandoned its inline-sixes in favor of V-6s.

“Half of our engine guys were sad when we switched from the inline-six to the V-6 layout,” one of Daimler’s engineers remembers. “Now it’s the other way around.” Mercedes is pulling an about-face, returning to the straight-six configuration for the same reasons that originally had it embrace the V-6.

Back then, a common parts and production strategy dictated the switch. Daimler had developed a generation of V-6 and V-8 engines with common parts. (The last remnant of that era is the loosely related 6.0-liter V-12 that sits under the hood of the 600 and AMG 65 models.) Continue Reading

Mercedes Capped F1 Regulations

While Mercedes is doing great performance wise in this years F1 scene, it’s a far cry from the dominance exhibited last year where Mercedes was bounds and leaps ahead of the competition.

Toto Wolff states that this is due to Mercedes hitting a performance cap as far as the regulations are concerned, allowing competition to catch up. Toto Wolff is also against the changes to regulations next year as he is worried it would further destroy the level playing field.

While the regulations remain the same, each team has the time to optimize their engines and catch up to the performance titan that is the Mercedes engine.

Mercedes has maxed out on performance under the current Formula 1 regulations, according to its motorsport boss Toto Wolff.

Mercedes won its third consecutive constructors’ championship in Japan while its drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are again contesting a private battle for the drivers’ title.

However, Mercedes has not been as dominant this term compared to the first two seasons of the V6 hybrid era.

Its tally of 679 points after 19 races is 24 short of its total at the same point last year.

After 19 races in 2015, the team had a record 15 front row lockouts, compared to 12 after the same number of races this year, while in the races, it has scored six one-twos this term compared to 12. Continue Reading

Mercedes-AMG E63

Soon to hit the LA auto show in November is the Mercedes E63 and E63 S, both of which the Mercedes-AMG chairman Tobias Moers described as representing “the biggest step forward we’ve ever taken from one generation to the next.”

And looking at the sleek futuristic aesthetics and the horsepower output of the 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine, putting this sedan up to the same number of horses as a few Ferrari supercars, we don’t doubt that claim

.

On Tuesday, Mercedes-Benz and its AMG performance division unveiled their latest offering — the E63. It is the latest entry in the German super-sedan arms race. When the E63 enters production, it will join a crowded field that includes such industry heavyweights as the BMW M5, Audi RS7, and Porsche Panamera Turbo.

The new super fast E-Class model will be offered in two variants: the standard E63 sedan and a “higher” performance E63 S. Both versions of the E63 sedan will be powered a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine.

“The new E63 models represent the biggest step forward we’ve ever taken from one generation to the next,” Mercedes-AMG chairman Tobias Moers said in a statement. Continue Reading

AMG C43 a Smooth Operator

While the news is fixated on the AMG C63 being a modern muscle car of German make, the C43 almost slips under the radar.

The new C43 coupe is set to make the bridge point between classy comfortable smooth rides and blood boiling explosively fast V-8 Twin-Turbocharged Engine.

It’s made to look sleek, drive smooth, and roar when you need it to, the ideal car for someone who wants versatility out of their car.

Daimler’s Mercedes-AMG division has largely made its name on theatrics: things like burly sounding engines, flashy styling add-ons, and wild performance. It’s practically the German equivalent of classic American muscle-car culture, as we saw with the latest C63 S coupe. Its 503-hp, twin-turbocharged V-8 makes a beastly noise and goes like stink, while its rear-wheel-drive setup makes tail-out antics a snap. It also looks the business with huge wheels and flared haunches that set it apart from lesser C-class coupes.

While the new Mercedes-AMG C43 coupe shares all but one digit in its name, it’s really a completely different animal, one considerably lower on the food chain. Continue Reading

Why Expensive Cars are so… Expensive

So not a lot of people actually ask this question, and most that come across it will probably answer the question incorrection, or at least mostly incorrect. When it comes to luxury cars being more expensive, it is easy to assume that this is due to higher quality parts and the cost of installing all of these extra features, you’d be on a decent track but not quite covering much of the distance in the gap between prices.

Now what a person really is buying when they buy a luxury car would be the exclusiveness of the model. How much it stands out in comparison to the robins, or because of the features it offers like a superior engine and extra safety features to keep you and yours in the possibility of accident. But the true source of the increased cost would be the fact that you are paying for the exclusivity of the item in question.

Every single detail of every car you meet on the road was designed and built in factories and engineering labs that costs a significant amount of money before you even start accounting for material costs. As far as the material cost difference between a luxury car and a honda civic, is that the luxury car only sold 10,000 models while the civic has sold a few million, and if the designing costs for the civic and the luxury car  were of anywhere similar amounts, then the honda civics designing costs are divided between 200 times more people than our generically named luxury car. The true cost of luxury cars comes from paying for the infrastructure to put them on the markets while expecting a lower sale volume.

Now with luxury cars you often seek to be noticed on the road, and now the cheapest way to get noticed is a fresh new pair of Mercedes rims that you might have the chance to win for free.

Submitting an Innovative Idea to Mercedes-Benz

So you think you’ve got a brand new idea that could revolutionize the Mercedes-Benz of your preference and you want them to include it in the next year lineup? Well, turns out auto company engineers are discouraged from speaking with private individuals due to a scandal involving a windshield wiper patent that many car companies plagiarized and eventually the owner of the design did successfully sue.

So what’s this mean about your new idea? Well it depends on if you want to make money off the idea or not. If you have a design or innovation so great that you think you could make a decent sum of cash off of it, then you’ll want to file a patent pending to own the idea before throwing it out to the engineers. So if you find that your idea has been stolen, you can then follow through with legal repercussions. If your idea is good enough and you have the available capital to have a startup, then you can market your product to be sold by part to auto-makers. If you don’t have the startup capital, then the easier method is to find a means to sell the patent to auto-makers who’d have an interest in your design.

However if you are an engineering philanthropist, then you can skip the legal troubles and self publish your designs on existing models of cars from various brands that you have an interest in. Then write a review about how much your new part has increased gas mileage in the new Mercedes engine or any other quality of life improvements your designs could add. Bonus points if you actually build and test the design and get real concrete data. Once you’ve done this you just need to share it on car discussion forums and by natural osmosis your ideas will make it to the engineers who could use or improve it.

Going Green on the Track

In it’s infancy stages, or first season, Formula E was a neck and neck race about driver skill as all the cars were identical, which made for amazing races. Now Formula E has allowed customization of the cars on the tracks which has quickly drawn the attention of many big names in the auto industry who want to both test their equipment and strut their stuff on the eco friendly racing track.

Mercedes is also set to join the fray next season, obviously looking to smash the competition with their outstanding engines.

We’re now two full seasons into the wild experiment of Formula E, a racing series that pits 20 F1-style electric racecars against each other on the streets of the biggest cities in the world. The racing has so far been excellent — the races are short, close, and competitive, and in both seasons the drivers’ championships were decided on the final day. Formula E has provided the kind of drama you hope for in any sport, but to find it in a series that’s brand-new is surprising.

An extra level of drama is coming in season three, kicking off this weekend in Hong Kong. Continue Reading

Maybe it’s Time for a New Benz Naming Convention

Some Mercedes-Benz cars are known to have notoriously long names, but they might be left in the dust in the near future with the EQ sub-brand adding yet another prefix before the model name. Soon enough we expect the Mercedes electric supercar to be prefaced with Mercedes-Benz AMG EQ and then finally the name of the car.

Click here for all of your Mercedes parts needs, it’ll be easier than saying the new brand names

The Mercedes-Benz hypercar currently in development could face a branding conundrum as the German automaker continues to add sub-brands.

It will wear the three-pointed star, making it a Mercedes-Benz. And it is being developed by AMG, the performance sub-brand. And it will share the Formula 1 hybrid powertrain, making it eligible to be part of the new EQ sub-brand that will denote electric vehicles.

Daimler used the Paris Motor Show to confirm work is underway on the hypercar and also to launch the new EQ brand. Executives aren’t worried about a potentially lengthy moniker, which could include “Mercedes-Benz AMG EQ” and then the name of the supercar. Continue Reading

The perfect pick-up for a classic car enthusiast or someone who’s never driven in an old Mercedes Roadster. A car like this can run almost indefinitely when it goes through proper engine maintenance.

Here’s a drop top classic from the ‘70s that will never go out of style. Ever. This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is practically new with only 54,818 miles on the clock and was just listed on Bring a Trailer.

2017 S-Class and S63 AMG Caught Cruising Together

While we still eagerly await a full in depth reveal of the 2017 S-Class Mercedes, we have seen it drive along with its sibling the Mercedes S63 AMG.

The new S-Class will sport many of the features revealed with the new E-Class including a tasteful infotainment system that is integrated better than ever before. While your Mercedes might not match up to the 2017 S-Class with modern features, you could gear up that engine so your Mercedes too could enjoy the road along the S63 AMG.

The facelifted Mercedes S-Class was spotted during development testing in Southern Europe, along with its go-faster silbing, the mighty S63 AMG.

The German luxury flagship is set to receive a range of updates, including some of the advanced tech features that debuted in the E-Class. Things like touch-sensitive controls, a new three-spoke steering wheels and a new set of digital displays are already a given, thanks to our skilled spies’ previous efforts.

Being one of the most impressive features of the current model, the updated S-Class will host a pair of two new high-resolution screens with no buttons in between them, making them look more unified and elegant. The infotainment system will be controlled by the new touchpad knob on the center console. Continue Reading

Mercedes-Benz Electric Cars More Affordable than Ever

The Mercedes B-Class has gone under the radar of most car connoisseurs but it certainly deserves more attention than it has gotten. It entered the market undercutting the similar model from BMW, the i3, and now it cuts the cost by another $2,000 to become a real bargain as far as luxury electrical cars are concerned.

For further savings on Mercedes, click here and experience the savings on your own Mercedes motors.

You may not have heard of it, but Mercedes-Benz currently produces an electric vehicle, the B-Class Electric Drive. It exists as a competitor to BMW’s i3, and it’s shaped more like a crossover than a car. Now, it’s even cheaper, undercutting the competition by a few thousand bucks.

The B-Class Electric Drive just dropped to $39,900. Previously, it came in at $41,450, just under the BMW i3’s starting price of $42,400. (These figures don’t account for federal or local incentives.) It’s nowhere near as popular as the i3, but this price drop could attract attention from folks interested in something a bit fancier than a Nissan Leaf. Continue Reading

A Closer Look at Mercedes 2017 S-Class

Mercedes flagship model, the S-Class sedan of 2017 has been probed for aesthetics, only finding minor differences between it and its older cousin. The new S-Class will be sporting a lot of new tech in the same old style, but what’s left to really know is what kind of engine Mercedes-Benz has in store for this beast. Perhaps we’ll get that info at the upcoming Paris Auto Show.

With just a little over a week left until the 2016 Paris Auto Show welcomes journalists (and visitors) from all parts of the globe, the 2017 S-Class has been caught in the open.
Dropping some of the vinyl stickers from the front and rear bumpers, Merc’s flagship sedan continues to keep its lighting units covered, suggesting that this is probably where the main visual tweaks can be found, but even with the camouflaged completely removed, chances are it will fly under the radar for most consumers.
The cabin posed for the camera as well, earlier this year, and from those spy shots we learned that, besides the usual trim updates, the S-Class features a bigger set of displays,

One Step Closer to Our Robot Overlords

The Auto-titan and tech startup have teamed up to deliver a concept van that they’ve called the Vision Van. The Vision Van combines self driving technology with completely electric motors and roof mounted delivery drones to guarantee a package could get to any location with 12 miles of a drivable road.

Click here and see where a new Mercedes engine could take you.

The latest company leaping into the delivery-by-drone business has long been known for performance vehicles of an entirely different sort.

Mercedes-Benz DAI, +1.74% on Wednesday revealed a concept car that can automatically deploy delivery drones, developed in partnership with drone-delivery startup Matternet, in which Mercedes announced what it labeled a multimillion-dollar investment. A Wall Street Journal report valued the investment at $562.7 million.

Called the Vision Van, the concept car itself, should it ultimately reach market, would require a human driver — but the vehicle’s drone is foreseen executing deliveries at the same time as the driver conducts others. It might also provide a measure of relief from such longstanding delivery impediments as dangerous and overcrowded roadways, though at least in the U.S., Federal Aviation Administration rules currently stipulate that drones cannot fly beyond an operator’s line of sight without a waiver. New Degree Program for Autonomous Vehicles

Udacity has announced that it has opened the gates for applications to its new nanodegree program that is partnered with Mercedes Benz with the plans to start teaching mid-October and finish 9 months later with the first graduating class of self-driving auto engineer specialists.

While it may be daunting to learn the technical fields required to become a self-driving auto engineer, you can start learning more about your own Mercedes engine and how to improve it.

Online education company Udacity has formally launched a new nanodegree program today, one that’s aimed squarely at budding self-driving car engineers.

Founded in 2011, Udacity is one of a growing number of companies offering so-called massive open online courses (MOOCs) — courses open to an unlimited number of people on the web. It’s big business, which is why Udacity alone has managed to raise more than $160 million in VC funding, to date.

There are more than 11,000 people enrolled in Udacity’s nanodegree programs today, and in excess of four million people have enrolled in one of Udacity’s free courses. Continue Reading

Wholly Self-Driving Cars Closer than You Think

The autonomous car concept has been a hot topic this year, as more and more people realize that it is something that could hit the market next year if manufacturers believe autonomous models will sale enough.

An interview with Joe Mosier from Adsit gave insight on the market outlining the various interest groups regarding autonomous cars and his personal experience with Mercedes “puritans” who are likely to never give up their control of the road.

When self-driving cars made waves several years ago, they seemed like a very far off type of fantasy.  Well, companies like Tesla and Mercedes, BMW and others have made quantum jumps in technology and safety towards the end goal of an autonomous vehicle.

Of course, we have all heard about the unfortunate accident that happened in a Tesla, which was the first recorded death in a vehicle of that kind.

Tesla and Elon Musk have long been tickling our fancies about what it would mean to have that much more free time during your daily commute or road trip. Sadly a DVD player was found in the deceased’s vehicle and a truck driver says he saw Harry Potter playing on the screen right before the accident. Continue Reading
